The Cordwainer has teamed up with Plymouth River School for the second year of a heartwarming pen pal program that bridges generations through the exchange of letters!
Spearheaded by community volunteer Karen Deluca, the initiative encourages meaningful interactions between senior residents and students, offering a unique opportunity to share life stories and broaden perspectives.
Karen, who has been volunteering at The Cordwainer for a year, is dedicated to enriching the lives of residents through programs such as flower arranging, short story reading, and the pen pal initiative. Her enthusiasm for bringing people together has been instrumental in the program’s success.
The partnership initially began with the efforts of Max Bohane, a talented fifth-grader from Plymouth River School in Hingham, who helped establish the connection between his school and The Cordwainer. Max, also a budding artist, designed the note cards used in the program, raising funds for charity through his artwork. His creativity and commitment have left a lasting impact.
This year, nine residents from The Cordwainer, including Madeline F., Maggie R., and Eleanor G., have participated in the pen pal program, exchanging notes with students throughout the school year.
“This program brings so much value to both our residents and the students,” said Maria Lastoria, Executive Director of The Cordwainer. “It’s amazing to see how something as simple as letter writing can create such meaningful connections. We’re proud to be part of this effort to bring people of different generations together.”
